Site preparation is an industry in
itself; they clear trees and brush and
remove stumps and rubble. We leave the
surface in good condition for the next
stage of construction. That kind of site
preparation tends to be recognized at
large sites rather than the smaller ones
that are most contractors' daily
workplace. It takes only a few minutes
to prevent those "Whoops!" about the
water pipe by the front window or the
gas main that makes a bend by the
junipers. Before we start excavating, we
make sure we know what is already in the
ground where we will be working. If it's
a residence, the owner is not always the
best authority on where everything is,
making location devices inexpensive
compared to errors in digging. When we
are excavating trenches, we take no
chances. We use shields or shoring for
the safety of everyone.
